Position Summary
Our client is seeking a skilled Tax Supervisor to join their dynamic CPA firm in Rockville, MD. The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of progressive public accounting experience and will be responsible for supervising tax engagements, preparing complex tax returns, and developing junior staff. Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Review
- Prepare and review complex federal and state tax returns for corporations, partnerships, S-corporations, and high net-worth individuals
- Conduct tax planning and provide consulting services to clients
- Perform tax research on moderately complex issues using professional tax resources
- Assist with tax compliance and estimated tax payment calculations
- Support clients during tax audits and correspondence with tax authorities
Team Supervision & Development
- Supervise and mentor junior tax staff, including staff accountants and associates
- Review work product for accuracy and completeness
- Provide on-the-job training and technical guidance to team members
- Assist with staff scheduling and work allocation
- Support performance evaluations and professional development planning
Client Relations
- Serve as primary contact for assigned clients and maintain strong relationships
- Communicate tax issues and recommendations effectively to clients
- Respond to client inquiries and provide timely resolution of tax matters
- Assist with client meetings and presentations
- Identify opportunities for additional services within existing client relationships
Practice Support
- Assist with engagement planning and budget management
- Ensure timely completion of tax returns and meet client deadlines
- Maintain organized client files and documentation
- Stay current with tax law changes and attend continuing education programs
- Participate in firm meetings and training sessions
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA license preferred (or progress toward CPA certification)
- 7-10 years of progressive public accounting experience
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations
- Proficiency with tax preparation software (CCH Axcess, Lacerte, Ultra Tax, or similar)
- Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, Xero, etc.)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
- Familiarity with tax research tools (Checkpoint, BNA, etc.)
Experience Requirements
- Solid experience preparing various types of tax returns
- Experience with tax planning and consulting
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train junior staff
- Experience with client interaction and relationship management
- Knowledge of tax compliance procedures and deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
- Active CPA license
- Master's degree in Taxation or related field
- Experience with trust and estate taxation
- Experience with multi-state tax issues
- Previous supervisory experience in public accounting
- Experience with specialized industries or complex tax matters
