Position Summary
The Senior Tax Accountant will be responsible for preparing complex tax returns, conducting tax research, and providing tax planning services to clients. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with solid technical tax knowledge who can work independently while contributing to team objectives during busy season and year-round client service initiatives. Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Compliance
- Prepare complex federal and multi-state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S-corporations, and C-corporations
- Handle sophisticated tax situations including multi-entity structures, rental properties, and investment portfolios
- Process quarterly estimated tax payments and annual tax projections
- Prepare tax extensions, amended returns, and prior year corrections
- Ensure all tax returns are completed accurately and filed within required deadlines
- Maintain current knowledge of federal and state tax law changes affecting clients
Client Service & Communication
- Serve as primary contact for assigned clients during tax season and year-round
- Conduct client interviews to gather tax information and identify planning opportunities
- Communicate with clients via phone, email, and in-person meetings regarding tax matters
- Explain tax concepts and strategies to clients in clear, understandable terms
- Prepare client tax organizers and coordinate document collection processes
- Respond to client questions and concerns promptly and professionally
Tax Research & Planning
- Research complex tax issues using professional research tools (RIA, CCH, Thomson Reuters)
- Provide basic tax planning advice to minimize client tax liabilities
- Assist with tax controversy matters including IRS correspondence and notice resolution
- Prepare supporting documentation and workpapers for tax positions taken
- Stay informed about tax law developments and their impact on client situations
- Contribute to firm knowledge base and best practices documentation
Quality Control & Review
- Review tax returns prepared by staff accountants and seasonal preparers
- Ensure work completed meets firm quality standards and professional requirements
- Perform quality control checks on complex calculations and tax computations
- Document review procedures and maintain detailed workpaper files
- Assist with firm peer review preparation and quality assurance processes
Team Collaboration & Development
- Mentor junior staff and seasonal employees on technical tax matters
- Assist with training new team members on firm procedures and software
- Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient workflow during busy season
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to process improvement initiatives
- Support colleagues with complex technical questions and research needs
Required Qualifications
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA certification preferred (or actively pursuing)
- Enrolled Agent (EA) certification acceptable in lieu of CPA
- 150 credit hours completed (preferred for CPA track)
Experience
- 3-6 years of tax preparation experience in public accounting or related field
- Strong experience with individual and business tax return preparation
- Experience with Connecticut state tax filings and multi-state returns
- Proven ability to handle complex tax situations and research issues
- Experience working in fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with professional tax software (Lacerte, ProSystem fx, Drake, or similar)
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations
- Experience with tax research databases (RIA, CCH, Thomson Reuters)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis
- Familiarity with QuickBooks and other small business accounting software
- Experience with document management and workflow systems
