An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Tax Investigations Manager to join a Top 30 UK accountancy firm based in the Exeter area.
This is a specialist role within a dedicated Tax Disputes & Investigations function, working with a varied portfolio of individuals, businesses and high-net-worth clients on complex matters involving HMRC.
The Role
You will take responsibility for managing a range of HMRC investigations and tax disputes, working closely with clients to understand their position, develop appropriate strategies and achieve the best possible outcomes.
The role will include:
Managing a portfolio of complex HMRC investigations and enquiries
Handling COP8 and COP9 cases and other high-risk HMRC enquiries
Advising on voluntary disclosures, HMRC campaigns and offshore matters
Managing correspondence and negotiations with HMRC
Supporting clients through the investigation process from initial enquiry through to settlement
Advising on contentious tax issues and potential penalties
Assisting with ADR, appeals and Tribunal matters where required
Working closely with colleagues across the wider tax team
Supporting and developing more junior members of the team
Building strong client relationships and contributing to the continued growth of the investigations practice
Identifying opportunities for business development and further client work
About You
HMRC experience is essential.
We are looking for someone with a strong background in tax investigations, ideally having worked within HMRC before moving into professional practice.
You will ideally have:
Previous HMRC experience within an investigations, compliance, fraud, counter-avoidance or related function
Strong experience handling HMRC enquiries and investigations
Exposure to COP8/COP9, disclosures and complex tax disputes
Excellent knowledge of HMRC processes and investigation procedures
Strong negotiation and communication skills
Experience managing your own caseload and client relationships
Previous experience supervising or mentoring junior colleagues
A strong commercial mindset and an interest in contributing to business development
Relevant tax qualifications such as CTA, ATT, ACA or equivalent would be advantageous
